Start with a conversation

Most people don’t know what they want until they see what’s possible.

Almost every project we do starts the same way: someone knows they want their property to look better, but they’re not sure whether that means a classic roofline outline, a permanent LED system, a full themed environment, or something they haven’t thought of yet.

That’s what the consultation is for. We look at your property, listen to what you’re picturing, and tell you honestly what would work best — including when a simpler option would serve you better than an expensive one. Then we design it, price it, and you decide.

For commercial clients, venues, and large properties, this becomes full project design and consultation — concept development, engineering, power planning, phasing, and budget scoping before a single fixture is ordered. It’s the same design process behind our work at Chase Center, Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, and Black Oak Casino Resort.

Custom designed exterior lighting on a modern home

What a consultation covers

  • Property assessment: Rooflines, trees, architecture, sightlines, power access, and mounting conditions — what your property can actually support
  • Options walkthrough: Seasonal vs permanent, static vs music-synced, standard vs themed — with honest guidance on what fits your goals and budget
  • Design concept: A specific plan for your property — where lights go, what color and style, and what the finished result will look like
  • Fixed pricing: A firm quote before any work begins — no hourly surprises, no scope creep, no upsells on install day

Custom theme design

  • Winter wonderlands: Full themed environments built around a cohesive concept rather than assembled piece by piece
  • Brand-aligned design: Color palettes, motifs, and concepts built around your company’s brand or a campaign
  • Any holiday or occasion: Christmas, Halloween, Diwali, Lunar New Year, weddings, grand openings, milestone celebrations
  • Multi-year planning: A design that builds over several seasons so the investment spreads out and the display keeps growing
How the design process works

From a rough idea to a finished plan.

You don’t need to arrive with a vision. Most clients start with “make it look good” and we build from there.

01

Talk it through

Phone, video, or on-site — whatever’s easiest. We ask what you’re picturing, what you’ve liked elsewhere, and what the budget range looks like.

02

Assess the property

We look at what the space can actually support — architecture, access, power, and sightlines. For most homes we can do this from imagery; larger projects get a site visit.

03

Design & price

We build a specific plan for your property and put a fixed price on it. If there are options worth comparing, we’ll show you more than one.

04

You decide

No pressure and no obligation. If it’s right, we book your install date. If it isn’t, no hard feelings — the consultation was free either way.

Why design matters

The difference between lights on a building and a display people remember.

Two properties can use the same lights, the same budget, and the same crew hours — and look completely different. Design is what separates them.

32 years of knowing what works

We’ve designed lighting for ranch homes, Victorians, hillside estates, storefronts, hotels, casinos, railroads, and an NBA arena. That range means we’ve already seen what works on a property like yours — and what looks good in a photo but disappointing in person.

Honest guidance, including “you don’t need that”

Sometimes the answer is a simple warm-white roofline, not a full pixel system. We’ll tell you when the cheaper option is genuinely the better one. Clients who’ve booked with us for 20+ years didn’t stay because we upsold them every season.

The designer is the installer

We’re not a design firm that hands your plan to a subcontractor. The crew that designs your project is the crew that installs, maintains, and removes it — so nothing gets lost between the concept and the finished result.

Consultation and design are free — you only pay if you decide to move forward with the install.  See installation pricing →

Design & Consultation FAQs

Questions before you reach out.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes — no fee, no deposit, and no obligation. We’ll assess your property, walk you through the options, design a plan, and give you a fixed quote. If it’s not the right fit, no hard feelings. You only pay if you decide to move forward with the installation.

Do you need to visit my property?

Not always. For most homes across the Bay Area, Sacramento, and the Central Valley we can build an accurate design and quote from satellite and street imagery, usually within 24 hours. Larger properties, commercial buildings, hillside homes, and complex or themed projects get an on-site visit so nothing gets missed.

What if I don’t know what I want yet?

That’s the normal starting point, and it’s exactly what the consultation is for. Most people arrive with “I want it to look good” rather than a specific plan. We’ll show you what’s possible on your property, explain the trade-offs between options, and help you land on something you’re genuinely happy with.

Can you design for holidays other than Christmas?

Yes. We design and install for Halloween, Diwali, Lunar New Year, weddings, corporate events, grand openings, and milestone celebrations — plus year-round patio and architectural lighting. If it involves light and an occasion, we can design it.

Can we build a display over several years instead of all at once?

Absolutely, and it’s a smart approach for larger properties. We’ll design the full vision up front, then phase it across multiple seasons so the budget spreads out and the display grows each year. Because we keep your design on file, every phase fits the original plan instead of looking bolted on.

Do you handle project design for commercial and large-scale properties?

Yes — that’s full project consultation: concept development, engineering, power planning, phasing, and budget scoping before anything gets ordered. It’s the same process behind our work at Chase Center, Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, and Black Oak Casino Resort. For venues and commercial properties, reach out early so there’s time to do the design properly.

“Twenty-two years and counting. Jack Frost has done our home every season and never once let us down. The install crew is the same faces year after year, and it shows.”
